INDIA – The power of faith – Khumbh Mela Festival

I am attending one of the biggest festival in India and probably in the world. Khumbh Mela Festival

festival

This is where Ganga, Yamuna and the Mythical Saraswaty get together and many believe that in a specific day, when the Sun, Jupiter and earth aline, a dip in to the river at this intersection will wash the sins and help reach salvation.

At this time of the year 100 millions plus of Hindus come to this gathering, the biggest gathering ( festival ) happens in Allahabad and it is every 12 years, I was here 12 years a go and it did look different, not that modernized as it is now. Before they were more bicycle and people and now are many cars and motorbikes that use the car horn continuously. It is a chaotic mixture of sounds that drive in to confusion. The activities during this time happen 24 hours for 55 days.

This time they are more pilgrims than Shadus , the shadus are late this time, most of them will be here later on this month or in the beginning of February. the festival last for 55 days and the number of visitors estimated during this period of time is close to 100 million of people.

There are many pontoon bridges over the Ganga that lead to the festival ground , the bridges make a great pattern photograph, in the late evening towards the sunset.

festival

Most of the  sadhus are robed in saffron sheets with ashes  on their skin and some may not wear any tips of robe , even when is real cold like now .

Shadu
After the Holy bath woman do dry their Saris, which makes a very interesting and colorful pattern in the morning sun.

This is fantastic you should check out Faith Connections- a Pan Nalin film shot at the Maha Kumbh Mela 2013. It captures the worlds largest spiritual gathering and is premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival 2013
